Open-Source Exchange Format for Sound Paths in Interactive Simulations

Many simulation tools exist that use geometrical acoustics to determine sound propagation paths from a source to a receiver. For example, using the well-known image source method. Storing such results can be advantageous when validating the results or creating visualizations. Furthermore, filters or auralizations can be created based on such propagation paths.This contribution presents a JSON-based format for storing geometrical propagation paths. The open-source nature of the schema enables the exchange of simulation data between different software and research groups. In its current form, the format supports interaction with geometries and inhomogeneous media. How this format can connect various simulation tools will be presented based on an example of noise barrier optimization.
