Source Directivity Implementation for Real-Time Room Acoustic Simulation with liveRAZR

Zusammenfassung: Sound source directivity is an essential aspect of room acoustic simulation. The source directivity significantly influences room acoustic parameters and improves the degree of realism, especially for binaural real-time rendering with six degrees of freedom (6-DoF). To incorporate source directivity in extended reality listening experiments, we implemented support for source directivity in liveRAZR, a real-time 6-DoF room acoustic simulator. The implementation allows for the inclusion of data in the SOFA format, which stores a set of directivity filters for several discrete directions. The directivity is integrated as part of the image source model, where the directivity filters are interpolated for the required direction using vector base amplitude panning and applied using uniformly partitioned convolution. Our technical evaluation confirmed the correct functioning of the implementation while meeting our real-time performance requirements so that the improved liveRAZR version could be used directly for recent listening experiments. In future work, we plan to extend the implementation to include dynamic (time-varying) directivity to perform psychoacoustic studies on the effects of dynamic source directivity of the human voice or musical instruments in 6-DoF binaural rendering.
