Improving Sound Insulation in Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) Wall Assemblies: A Systematic Investigation

Abstract:
Wooden buildings have gained increasing attention due to their sustainability and environmental benefits. However, one key challenge in wooden construction is ensuring adequate sound insulation. This study presents a systematic investigation of the improvement of sound insulation in cross- laminated timber (CLT) wall assemblies.The research was conducted in a wall test facility, enabling the evaluation of different layer configurations of a CLT wall. Various materials and layer combinations were tested to determine their effect on the sound transmission. A first study was performed to examine the individual contributions of each layer, with variances of the thickness of the CLT structure, the insulation layers, the suspension of the exterior wall and the exterior wall.Finally the effect of an Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS/WDVS) was investigated on CLT of various thickness.
