The difference between theory and practice in churches

Abstract:
In larger churches, it is often not easy to achieve good speech intelligibility and amplified music transmission because of the generous acoustics. An acoustic advice or configuration of an audio system is often based on theoretical research with 3D calculation models. The question is then how the result in practice after implementation of the plan compares with the theoretical approach. From experience with hundreds of churches, insight is given into the difference between theory and practice. It also addresses the question of whether there is generally a preference for digitally controllable loudspeakers or passive variants in large monumental churches. The contribution of specific limited acoustic adjustments in achieving good speech transmission is also discussed. Finally, common typical differences in thinking between consultant, installer and client are highlighted, the knowledge of which can be useful in practical application in projects.
