Experimental and Numerical Assessment of Slat Cove Liners

Abstract: Slat and slat track noise dominates the high lift system generated noise. Substantial noise reductions that protect the community from high approach noise levels can only be achieved by relatively simple retro fit technology. A potentially suitable technology is a slat cove liner as was investigated in the EU co-funded research project InVentor. The liner material, its position in the slat and its proper integration are crucial points that mainly influence the finally achievable noise reduction. Experimental investigations in three wind tunnels reveal acoustic benefits and drawbacks. Numerical flow and noise simulations were carried out to investigate some shortcomings that target materials. The paper will highlight methods as well as existing and future technologies that might help to arrive at low noise leading edge devices for high lift systems. Worked examples realized on 3-dimensional semi-span aircraft models will demonstrate the benefit of slat cove liners. Finally, an outlook and demands for future research will be provided.
