Can the sound power of chamber music ensembles be determined under realistic performance conditions?

Abstract:
The acoustic design of music rehearsal rooms and recital spaces relies on achieving optimal sound levels, typically within 85-90 dB, as deviations can significantly affect their suitability for ensemble performances. Accurate knowledge of the sound power radiated by various instruments is crucial for meeting these design targets. Previous benchmark investigations have derived single-value estimates of radiated sound power for a range of instruments based on measurements under controlled laboratory conditions; however, concerns remain regarding the relevance of these findings for real-world performance settings. This research addresses this gap by investigating the radiated sound power of chamber ensembles in realistic environments. Challenges include the frequent lack of ideal diffusity in the sound field of auditoria and the dynamic nature of musical excitation. This study examines whether valid sound power measurements can be obtained under these constraints by employing various test signals under repeatable conditions. The presentation concludes with illustrating how this approach offers a more detailed perspective on the radiated sound power during live performances.
