Project Tyre Road Noise - Model-based transfer from OBSI measurements to pass-by

Road traffic noise is a central environmental issue, and with the electrification of vehicles, tyre–road interaction becomes the dominant noise source. The mFUND project “Tyre Road Noise” aims to develop an estimation method for pass-by noise that is as independent as possible from boundary conditions and captures real operating conditions and influencing parameters of the vehicle, tyres, and road better than conventional measurements on ISO test tracks. For this purpose, a measurement campaign was conducted on a test track using the four project vehicles, a selection of tyres, and considering two track sections. The publication presents the measurement setup, which integrates near-field sound intensity at the wheel (OBSI), far-field pass-by microphones, NAWS cavity sensors inside the tyre, as well as temperature and vehicle dynamics data, along with the results of the campaign and progress in developing the estimation method. A first physics-based modeling approach is presented which, based on the OBSI-method, already provides a good estimation of pass-by measurement results. Furthermore, data from additional sensors is included to systematically uncover correlations between operating conditions and noise emissions that have so far been barely captured in real traffic, and to optimize the estimation method.
