Directional Alignment of Binaural and Loudspeaker Playback Systems Using a QR Code

Abstract:
Devices for Augmented Audio (AA) and Augmented Reality (AR) commonly use headphones, allowing 3D audio playback via binaural signals rendered on the AA/AR device. In setups where loudspeakers are employed for 3D audio playback, they are typically connected to an audio workstation responsible for rendering the audio. When combining both playback systems headphones and loudspeakers the coordinate systems of each must be aligned for consistent audio directionality. Our solution utilizes a QR code label, whose physical position is recognized by the AR devices camera. This provides a robust setup process that ensures coincident directional playback across both the headphone and loudspeaker systems.
