Evaluating Sound Insulation for Door Leaves: A Collaborative Study

Abstract:
Adequate sound insulation of doors is crucial in many situations, such as dwellings, meeting rooms, schools, and hospitals. Therefore, correctly determining the sound insulation properties is essential. The product standard for internal pedestrian door sets, EN 14351-2, primarily refers to measurements according to the internationally recognized ISO 10140 series. Alternatively, it provides a table where the sound insulation of a door set can be determined using a com-bination of the sound insulation properties of the door leaf and door seals. EN 14351-2 refers to the ISO 10140 series for measuring the sound insulation of door leaves and door seals. However, the ISO 10140 series does not provide guidance for mounting door seals alone, which can lead to various mounting methods and result in different measured sound insulation. A collaboration between a test institute (FORCE Technology) and a door producer (Jeld-Wen) tested various combinations of door leaves (with high and low sound insulation), door seals, and mountings. This paper presents the results of this study.
