Abstract: Plate resonator silencers enable effective low-frequency noise attenuation within compact spaces. Thereby, the choice of the plate material significantly impacts the acoustic behaviour of these silencers. In addition to acoustic performance, plate resonators have to fulfil further requirements in order to be suitable for certain applications. In exhaust systems, for instance, it is necessary for plate resonators to be both heat-resistant and insensitive to particles in the fluid. Therefore, this study systematically investigates the influence of the plate material on the scattering coefficients of plate resonator silencers. A semi-analytical model is initially used to quantify the effect of the individual material parameters on transmission, reflection and dissipation. Specific materials from different material classes are then taken into consideration and various single- and multi-chamber configurations are designed using the semi-analytical model. Furthermore, some of these configurations are investigated experimentally using a silencer test rig and the measured data obtained are compared with the calculated scattering coefficients. The knowledge acquired about the influence of the plate material can then contribute to the targeted design of plate resonator silencers, e.g., to enable broadband attenuation by combining different materials and chamber geometries.
