Abstract: The reduction of noise emissions from technical noise sources is of particular importance for noise control in workplaces, for environmental protection and for consumer protection. Current measurement standards for determining the sound power level, a key characteristic for the noise emission, are in many practical cases associated with a high level of effort or require expensive measuring equipment. Oftentimes there is also a lack of the necessary expertise to properly apply the current standards of ISO 9614-X and ISO 374X. Therefore, a joint research project (F 2571) between the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has been started recently to develop a simplified measurement method. It will be based on manual sound pressure scanning and is intended to be applicable at currently used measurement distances, but also in the near field if possible. This contribution introduces the research project and first results of analytical calculations.
