Abstract: Room acoustics has been an active field of acoustics research, investigating the acoustic conditions of indoor spaces, which is highly relevant to users’ health and well-being. Particularly in acoustically important buildings, such as concert halls, room acoustics has been investigated with predictions in the design and renovation stages. Room acoustic simulations have become more versatile over time, and consequently, there are several simulation/reproduction tools suitable for various purposes. Recently, we have witnessed crucial advances in virtual prototyping and digitalization technologies in room acoustics, such as commercial wave-based numerical simulations. However, there are still general challenges and bottlenecks that make the collaborative workflow between architects, acousticians, and building designers difficult and time-consuming. In this paper, recent survey results on the challenges of room acoustics simulation are presented, and suggestions to mitigate these challenges are provided in terms of the input data and geometrical details of the model to be simulated.
