A Comprehensive Room Impulse Response Database for Spatial Audio

Abstract:
Spherical microphone arrays are valuable tools for realistic sound field analysis and higher-order Ambisonics (HOA)-based spatial signal processing. Room impulse responses measured with spherical microphone arrays are particularly effective for simulating complex acoustic environments. This paper presents a novel spatial room impulse response database collected using an Eigenmike em64 spherical microphone array, measured in a room compliant with the base reference ITU-R BS.1116-3, which features spherically mounted loudspeakers and low reverberation. In total, 36 · 64 = 2268 sourcereceiver combinations were considered, which resulted in 2268 · 64 = 145152 room impulse responses. Through simulations, we demonstrate the advantage of using em64 with high spatial resolution via sound field reproduction and steered response power (SRP) map examples. For future studies, this comprehensive database could benefit diverse research areas, including sound source localization, acoustic scene analysis, and machine learning assisted spatial signal processing. We make the database publicly available online to support further research.
